Big Red falters on the road against Ohio
Last year it was the "Meltdown in Madison." This year? Let's call it the "Shellacking at the Shoe." Nebraska was embarrassed for the second year in a row in a huge Big Ten road game falling Saturday night to the Buckeyes 63 to 38.
"Obviously, we didn't play our best football. Like I just told our football team, we need to win out. We didn't play good enough. We didn't play well. I give Ohio State credit. We didn't play good enough. They deserved to win the football game," said Coach Bo Pelini. "We turned the ball over five times and gave them points. Man, that's, we gotta do our part, we gotta score more than our opponent, whatever that is. We can't turn the ball over and give them short fields and touchdowns. It's been the story of the season. We gotta fix it. We gotta fix it," said Tim Beck. "We came out pretty strong offensively, you know, it's just the turnovers bit us in the end. Like I said last week we can't keep doing that and we continue to do so. The outcome of the game was really dependent on that," said Ameer Abdullah. "It's tough when you beat yourselves; we stopped ourselves at the interceptions and didn't take care of the football," said Spencer Long. "It's hard to win a game like that." The Nebraska defense was ravaged again by a dual thread quarterback as Braxton Miller ran wild - 186 yards and a touchdown on the ground. "They got, obviously, the long run right after we went up 17-7, kind of turned some momentum on us. We didn't play well - bad coaching, bad execution. Just didn't play well," said John Papuchis. "Braxton is a great football player. We knew that going in. He has had big play capability. We were doing fine there until he busted loose a big run and then we could do nothing after that," Ross Els said. "He is a really good player," said Eric Martin. "You see the numbers he put up." Another tough break on the injury front for Rex Burkhead as the running back hurt his ankle in the third quarter. However, the coaches do remain hopeful that he'll be able to return soon. "I think he's going to be pretty stable. I don't think it's serious damage, but he wasn't able to return. And he'll be fine. He'll keep fighting back however long it takes, whatever he has to go through this year," said Ron Brown. "He played well. He had some big runs. He had good eyes and he seemed to be getting his groove back. You could tell going into the game he was ready to play. So, it was an unfortunate time for him to get hurt, but that's the way it is. Those are things you can't control." |
