Husker duo teams up for Olympic gold
When Husker National and World Champion wrestler Jordan Burroughs competes at the games of the 30th Olympiad in London, his head coach Mark Manning will be right there with him.
Coaching Olympic wrestlers is nothing new for the Husker head coach.
That is Husker wrestling coach Mark Manning always willing to get right into the action during practice with his team.
For a 3rd time, the coach, a former college wrestler himself, will be part of the USA wrestling staff for the games of the 30th Olympiad in London right here on NBC.
It's no surprise coach Manning is on the staff again after he successfully helped coach the team in the 96 games in Atlanta and 2000 games in Sidney.
"In '96 they did really well. There was ten weight classes, then we had six medals out of ten wreights and then in 2000 we had one gold medalist, 2 silvers and two bronze," Manning said.
Unlike the first two Olympic assignments, the coach will have one of his own wrestlers. World Champion and #1 ranked Jordan Burroughs. That give him even more of a sense of anticipation.
"Jordan is doing a great job in his training and done a great job in his preparation and I'm sure this next month we're going to refine some things and fine tune some stuff right now, but it's a pretty neat deal, you know, and it's once in a lifetime. It really boils down to August 10th and Jordan going out there and doing his thing, being the best," said Manning.
In 2000, Coach Manning looked on as former Husker Rulon Gardner captured the gold in Greco-Roman wrestling defeating the previously unbeatable foe, Russia's Alexander Korelan.
"I saw him wrestle and it was pretty exciting. It was the day before we started freestyle and it was really neat just to be there and see it happen was very inspiring," said Manning.
As we've said, coach Manning will also have former UNK National champion wrestler Tervel Dlagnev with him in London wrestling for team USA. We'll hear from the coach tomorrow about having these two spectacular wreslters with him for theres games as we quickly approach the games fo the30th Olympiad right here on NBC with the opening ceremonies July 27th.
