Game of the Week: Adams Central vs Gibbon (9/21/12)
Our Aurora Cooperative Game of the Week matches a team that has had a winning tradition for quite some time against a squad that is trying its best to build one.
It will be the Adams Central Patriots visiting the Gibbon Buffaloes Friday night at 7:00 as district play - which leads to playoff chances - gets underway. The Adams Central Patriot and his team will take to the road Friday to where the Buffalo roam. Welcome to Gibbon high school where the Buffs and Patriots clash in a battle of 3-0 squads. The super bowl champion New York Giants have their Eli in quarterback Eli Manning and the Buffs have their Eli, running back Eli Van Meter who has rushed for over 600 yards on the ground already in those 3 games. It's fitting the Buffs practice next to a cornfield given how Adams Central Patriot coach Bill Carlin describes Eli. "He's kind of like a pheasant darting through a cornfield. He's really quick and small and uses his blockers very well and the team plays real hard so they're doing a lot of good things they need to be doing," said Adams Central Coach Bill Carlin. The Patriots have a running back they feel good about. Jake Fowler has been as good as anybody and Coach Carlin says he'll be 100 percent after missing time the past two games. Receiver Blake Overmiller who didn't play last week against Fairbury will play Friday at Gibbon. As we've discussed, the Patriots are back down to Class C-1 ranks from the tougher Class B division of football, a fact not lost on Gibbon coach Mark McLaughlin. "They've always been big fish, little pond in C-1. They went up to B and were little fish, big pond and they competed. They can play and it's the same with Gibbon. We're little fish, big pond, but that doesn't mean we're scared and we're by no means going to back down," said Gibbon Coach Mark McLaughlin. Though the Buffs are 3-0 their beaten opponents have just one victory among them. So how will this one go? We asked one of the experts. "Here's the deal, Ed," said Huskerland Prep Report Editor Bob Jensen. "Adams Central is going to be a substantial favorite and they should be. They've got a great defense, they're a well rounded team. They've got some depth, they showed that with the injuries they play through against Wilber Clatonia. Where Gibbon has a puncher's chance is if they can get Eli Van Matre going a little bit in the running game and keep the ball away from Adams Central. If they do that they can keep it close and make it a competitive game." Anyone driving on the road by either Adams Central high school this week or Gibbon high school can see by the signs both schools are looking forward to this game. |
