Game of the Week: Aurora vs GINW
At the start of this season, Aurora Husky football coach Randy Huebert said "watch our for Grand Island Northwest, they'll be an improved team."
The coach has certainly turned out to be right since the Vikings are 4-2.. His Huskies, who are 5-1 on the campaign, get to host those Vikings Friday night to see just how good they are. Friday's Aurora Cooperative Game of the Week pits two very different programs. One is Aurora with a tradition of excellence, the other is an up and coming squad that has looked impressive so far. But one thing they do have in common is a loss to Scottsbluff in which they learned a lot about their teams. "I think the biggest thing we found out is mentally we're getting there. We are becoming a tough team, we're staying in the fight, even when we're down 16, you know, I think the Northwest team of old would have folded so we stayed in the fight so we kept going," said GINW coach Kevin Stein. "Well, we always like to see how we bounced back, see what our character is like, you know, and what our unity is like after a loss as so I thought our kids responded well," said Huebert. And in big rivalries defense is always the name of the game. "They have some big boys up front and big linebackers, I mean, I think we'll be able to find some spots in their defense, but mostly the size they might have a little bit of an advantage," said GINW quarterback Zach Rouzee. "We have a few wrinkles put in for defense, but mainly we're going to be playing Aurora football, getting set up quick and reading our keys and doing our jobs," said Aurora linebacker Logan Geiger. So how does the guru Bob Jensen see this one playing out? "I think this is going to be a great ballgame. I think before the season started I had a feeling Northwest might be ready for a little bit of a breakthrough. Their offense got the best total yardage in Class B. They're going to cause a lot of problems for Aurora. I just think Aurora's got a little more defense than Northwest does and I'd take Aurora but not by much. It should be a great ballgame," said Jensen. |
