Game of the Week: Sutton vs. St. Cecilia
Among the playoff matchups we'll see Wednesday night is a rematch of one of the regular season's most competitive contests. The Sutton Mustangs stormed into Duncan Field earlier this season and handed the Bluehawks their first regular season home loss since 2006.
Now the scene shifts for a playoff rematch. It's just about time for a Happy Halloween in Sutton. The Great Pumpkin and the friendly ghost will greet everyone a block from the football field. That contest is a big deal as we see on a sign down the road at Sutton high school. It is a playoff game between the Sutton Mustangs and St. Cecilia Bluehawks. "We're really excited. We're looking for the playoffs all year so that is what we worked for so we control our own destiny from here on out," said St. Cecilia running back Joel Grafel. "Winning is the fun part and we're 9-0 right now so it's been a lot of fun, but at the same time we keep coming back focused and we're still not to our goal yet. We want to win the state championship," Sutton linebacker/fullback Mitchell Carlson said. These squads met about a month ago when the Mustangs pulled off the 2nd half kickoff return reverse. This was good for a touchdown and it really took the wind out of the Bluehawks sails as St. Cecilia dropped a rare home game 14-6. "The first game was a close one against them so if we score when we need to score and when we get down in the red zone if we can capitalize on our drives then we should be all right," said St. Cecilia running back Nick Brouillette. "We know each other pretty well. We played each other every year in the past. I don't know how many years but I think it'll be a pretty good game they'll be ready and so will we," said Sutton quarterback Cole Wiseman. Before last week's playoff first round win over Thayer Central, Bluehawk assistant Randy Ahrens told News 5 his team is getting healthier. After that game, the news was not so good. "We come up with two or three more ankles that were old injuries that we thought were healed and so we're hoping that those recover a little faster, but other than that I think we're in pretty good shape," said St. Cecilia Coach Carl Tesmer. While the Bluehakws could be without starting quarterback Xander Schmidt and wide receiver Cesar Teamo, all hands are on deck for the Sutton Mustangs. "Right now we're extremely healty and we're extremely fortunate. Everyone we started the season with we have right now and so that is a very forturnate part of our team," Sutton Coach Steve Ramer said. So will it be the tradition right Bluehawks or the undefeated Sutton Mustangs moving on in the Class C-2 playoffs? We'll find out Wednesday night in the Aurora Cooperative Game of the Week. |
