Giltner Hornet fan reflects on 2012 season

As we've seen here on News 5, the Giltner Hornets have been one of the outstanding high school football teams to watch for a number of years.

One fan in particular is very excited about the prospects of this year's squad.

It wasn't so long ago he led the school to a state championship. Fast forward 28 years later where his son is trying to do the very same thing.

Here at Giltner as Quarterback Jake Findley directs the Hornets attack, one of the best seats in the house isn't a seat. It is from the back of a pickup truck. That is where former Giltner Quarterback Randy Findley watches the game. His wife Wendy is there, too.

As Randy watched the Hornets, his mind drifts back to yesteryear, 1984 when as a senior In high school he led the Hornets to the state championship right here on this field.

News 5: Do you remember the championship?

"No, not really."

News 5: You don't remember it?

"Yeah, I remember it."

News 5: Does it seem like yesterday?

"Not quite yesterday, but I remember it."

Another guy that remembers it is Randy Gartner, another 1984 Giltner player whose son Dillon is a lineman on this season's Giltner team. He declined to talk to us preferring to let his son's team doing the talking here on the field, which they did do with a 59-17 win over Kenesaw.

For Randy Findley, it is great to have Randy Gartner back in Giltner after returning home from Gothenburg.

"Oh, I haven't seen him for a long time since he moved back, but it's nice to see him move back and I hope his son is having a good time."

As for the 2012 Giltner Hornets, they seem to have the championship look of that team back in 1984. It remains to be seen if they put another championship banner up here at Giltner.

"As long as they stay healthy, I don't know, they'll go deep in the playoffs as long as they stay healthy."

The 1984 Hornets won the championship right here on this field. If the 2012 Hornets win the title they will do so at the home of the Huskers at Memorial Stadium in about 2 months.
