St. Cecilia football returns with renewed vigor
For the first time in a number of years, none of the Hastings high schools play each other in football this season. All 3 are in different classes, Hastings in Class B, Adams Central in C-1 and St. Cecilia in C-2.
The Bluehawks have had a great 3 year run winning 2 state championships, but the one that got away last year motivates them for this season. News 5's newest member Will Sherratt picks up the story. Last season St. Cecilia fell short of the ultimate goal of winning a state title after losing to St. Pats in the C-2 quarterfinals. However, this year's squad returns many contributors to last year's team. And appear posed for another dominant season. "We were young last year. We had some good athletes, but we had a lot of juniors, actually, sophomores, playing and they are juniors this year. You know we're still pretty young, but those kids are a year older and a little more physical and they had a good year in the off season in lifting and everything. So we're looking for a real, real good year. We've got a good quarterback in Schmidt. You know, Joel Grafel at fullback can play, I think, in any division in any league in the classifications. You know, we've got some size and some experience and you know we're not huge, but we're a good football team," said Coach Carl Tesmer. Most programs would gladly take St. Cecilia's 10-1 campaign in 2011. But for the Bluehawks the one blemish serves as extra motivation as they look forward to 2012. "I think that one loss last year was kind of an eye-opener for us and now we're re-focused and recharged and ready to go win state this year," said defensive end Chris Hartman. "Yeah, it's getting exciting. We're all getting pumped up for that first game. Our intensity is all up and we're just ready to play," lineman Michael Huynh said. "Well, I'm glad it's a new season and things start all over. But this is the kind of team that I think if things go well and we stay healthy that we can make a run at things," Coach Tesmer said. The Bluehawks begin their quest for a state title at Centennial on August 31st. |
