Thursday is a full day as far as major sporting events go. There are the Olympic swim trials in Omaha, the NBA Draft in Newark and Euro 2012 semifinal between Italy and Germany in Warsaw, Poland.
We kick off the night in Omaha where Michael Phelps looks to qualify in event three, the 200 fly. Out in Omaha, somewhere in middle America, qualifying Olympians on a nightly basis Thursdayd night they did it in three events. We start with the women's 200 freestyle. It's 17 year old phenom Missy Franklin taking on the grizzled veteran 22 year old Allison Schmitt and Schmitt shows she has what it takes to turn heads pulling away from the field in a new American record of one minute 54 point four seconds qualifying in another event for the London games. Now to the reason everybody bought tickets and Michael Phelps. Phelps continues his dominance in the 200 Butterfly beating second place finisher Tyler Clary by almost a second and a half posting the fastest time in the event this year in the 200 fly stopping the clock in one 53 point six five seconds qualifying for his third different event in this year's trials. And finally Thursday night the utility race of all swimming races the women's 200 meter IM. Swimmers going 50 meters using each stroke the back, breast, butterfly and freestyle and this race much like the other two finals not really all that close but the closest of the three as Caitlin Leverenz beats Ariana Kukors by just over a second to take the top spot in the event. |
