Rulon Gardner talks about Olympic commentator role

So far its been a rough go for the United States in the sport of Greco-Roman wrestling.

Later this week both Jordan Burroughs at 163 pounds and Tervel Dlagnev in the heavyweight division hope to capture gold medals in freestyle wrestling.

2000 Greco Roman gold medalist and former Husker Rulon Gardner is an NBC Olympic wrestling commentator and talked to me about his role on our network this week.

"My role will actually be the color commentator. I'll be the one that analyzes the moves, the processes and basically how the match is going. If the wrestler steps up and wins the period it will be my job to commentate, kind of be the voice and face of wrestling for the next few weeks and share that.

"Everyone in America is like why doesn't wrestling get more coverage? Why, why, why? And, I'm like, it all comes down to you guys winning. You guys win medals, you win matches, you'll be on TV. And so there's always that kind of chip on the shoulder, but it's like you know what? You guys gotta perform. I won two Olympics, I won two medals and that's what people expect and I think in America we'll get to that point."
