Some student-athletes from the discontinued UNO Maverick football and wrestling teams are visiting UNK Thursday or will be shortly to inquire about transferring to the Lopers.
Maverick athletic director Trev Alberts announced Sunday that UNO will have to drop football and wrestling, that the school could no longer afford to fund those programs and that UNO will leave the MIAA conference, the league the Lopers are to join the year after next. This came the day after the Mavrerick wrestling team won a 3rd consecutive Division II national championship here at the UNK Health and Sports Center.
The Lopers will try to make the best of a tough situation for those former UNO athletes.
Athletic Director Jon McBride said UNK does have the financial rescouces to help offer scholarships to at least some of the UNO athletes that might want to transfer to the Kearney school.
Long time UNO wrestling coach Mike Denny will be at Lochland Country Club in Hastings Friday to discuss the UNO's decision to drop his sports and football.
A grass roots effort may be underway to try and save the wrestling program, but that seems to be a longshot at best.
