Just hours after winning a 3rd consecutive National Championship and a 5th in 6 years, UNO wrestling coach Mike Denney learned his program would be discontinued.
As we've reported, wrestling along with football is being dropped to save money at the Omaha University.
The Mavs wrestling squad won the title at the UNK sports center Saturday. Coach Denney came to Hastings Friday at Lochland to talk to an insurance executive luncheon where he told us how he found out about the University's decision.
Like the UNO football players, Maverick wrestlers might look to transfer to UNK where former Maverick wrestler Marc Bauer is coach.
Coach Denney said he's not yet had any conversations with Coach Bauer about where UNO wrestlers might go, but realistic or not, might have a better idea.
Of course that would take another school that does not have wrestling to add it as a sport.
Next week, the university Board of Regents will meet and apparently make it official that football and wrestling will be gone at Nebraska-Omaha.
Mike Denney is also a teacher at UNO and he told us it's not clear if he'll remain at the university after this school year where he has taught for more than 3 decades.
Football coach Pat Behrens does not teach classes there and his future and the future of that long time successful coach and his staff is much in question.
UNK football coach Darrell Morris talked about how he's been in touch with Coach Behrens.
As we reported earlier on News 5, UNK will soon send a delegation to UNO to meet with some football and wrestling Maverick student-athletes that may be interested in transferring to UNK.
