At least two fatalities have been confirmed and at least 10 people have been hospitalized, four of which are critical, after an apparent explosion at an Omaha animal feed processing plant.
POLICE WERE CALLED TO THE INTERNATIONAL NUTRITION PLANT IN OMAHA AROUND 10 A-M LOCAL TIME AFTER A FIRE AND EXPLOSION WERE REPORTED AND A CONCRETE TOWER PARTIALLY COLLAPSED.
INTERIM OMAHA FIRE CHIEF BERNIE KANGER (KANG'-ur) SAID FIREFIGHTERS ARE SEARCHING THE BUILDING FOR PEOPLE WHO MAY HAVE BEEN TRAPPED BY THE BLAST OR FALLING DEBRIS.
"Due to the significant damage inside the structure and the amount of debris, we have not been able to search every area of the building to determine that everybody is in fact out of the structure."
AT LEAST ONE FIREFIGHTER WAS INJURED.
FAMILY MEMBERS, MEANWHILE, SAY THEY HAVE RECEIVED CELL PHONE CALLS AND TEXT MESSAGES FROM LOVED ONES WHO ARE UNACCOUNTED FOR.
"John sent me a text saying, 'Hon I love you. I'm trapped.' And that was it, and I thought he was kidding and he hasn't answered me back yet."
OMAHA POLICE SAY 38 PEOPLE WERE INSIDE THE BUILDING WHEN IT EXPLODED.
THE COMPANY MAKES ANIMAL SUPPLEMENTS AND FEED PRODUCTS FOR FEED MANUFACTURERS, ANIMAL HEALTH DISTRIBUTORS AND LARGE LIVESTOCK PRODUCERS.
NO WORD YET ON WHAT MIGHT HAVE CAUSED THE EXPLOSION.
