We were hoping our final Aurora Cooperative Game of the Week would bring us to one of the state championship games next week at Memorial Stadium in Lincoln.
It certainly has...
Coach Glen Snodgrass and his York Dukes will battle the Omaha Skutt Skyhawks Monday night for the Class B Title.
It is our state championship edition of the Aurora Cooperative Game of the Week.
Last Friday at one end of Omaha All–State wide receiver Ty Danielson and the York Dukes were knocking off the previously undefeated Gretna Dragons 12–7 to punch their ticket to the State Class B Championship game.
On the other end of town, it was the impressive Skutt Skyhawks defeating the McCook Bison 24–7. Those two games in Omaha set up this Class B Showdown in Lincoln at Memorial Stadium for the championship.
For the Dukes, this championship chase actually began last year when they upset the top seeded Scottsbluff Bearcats in the first round of the playoffs.
"I definatley said that all along as the success we had this year came from what we accomplished last year you know, we had those big moments in the playoffs weren't new expericnes for us we had been there before so that definitely set the stage for us.", said coach Glen Snodgras.
They're known as the York Dukes but this week they could be known as the York "Hawks" sicne they have Mohawks and there is a method to the madness.
"We started it last year, our senior class when we went out to Scottsbluff and thought it was a good idea and everybody just kind of tagged along this year, the whole community, some dads kind of jumped on the train and are participating and its just something we're doing now," said Duke running back Troy Taylor.
Before the season, the Dukes picked up a good lineman Brock Shoff who transferred in from Cambridge. If the name seems familiary, it should, Brock's brother Michael Shoff of the South Dakota State Jackrabbits who played the Huskers in Memorial Stadium this season played there.. Now Brock will play in a game there.
Every night since I was a kid actually I've dreamed of playing in Memorial Stadium and holding up a championship trophy so it's going to be a dream come true I hope.
The York–Skutt Monday night wll be the last of 3 title games that day and has a chance to be the most compelling, that's why its our Aurora Cooperative Game of the week.
