Carla Ann Freeburg, 79 years of age, of Holdrege, passed away on Thursday, November 14, 2013 at the Christian Homes Care Community in Holdrege. Carla was born on September 15, 1934 on the family farm in Harlan County near Oxford, Nebraska, the ninth of eleven children born to Carl Otto and Clara Louise (Hoppe) Broeker. Carla received her primary education from the Carter Rural School in Harlan County through the eighth grade and then graduated from Mascot High School with the class of 1952.
Following her education, Carla moved to Holdrege, where she was employed by the Northwestern Bell Telephone Company as an operator. On November 18, 1956 she was united in marriage to Arvid “Laval” Freeburg. The couple were blessed with three children: Jeff, Tim and Sue. Carla was then able to stay at home with the children until they were teenagers. She then began a career at Becton-Dickinson in 1973 and continued her employment with B-D until her retirement in 1998 after 25 years of service.
Laval, along with his brother, Rudy and father, Harvey, started a Big Band group called “Laval Freeburg and the Starlight Serenaders.” Carla played the drums in the band for several years. They enjoyed traveling and playing as a group for over 25 years.
Carla also enjoyed reading and listening to Big Band Music. She loved to bake. A special favorite of the family was her delicious rye bread. Most of all Carla loved the time spent with her grandchildren. Carla and Laval attended the Emmaus Evangelical Free Church north of Funk, Nebraska as long as their health permitted. She also enjoyed being part of the B-D Alumni through the years. On December 29, 2012 she was preceded in death by her husband, Laval.
Besides her husband, Laval and her parents; Carla was preceded in death by her three sisters: Louise Broeker in infancy, Marjorie (Brown) Dyas and her husband, Dick Dyas and Berniece McQuiston and her husband, Roland; three brothers: Kenneth “Bud” Broeker, Robert Broeker and Oral Broeker and his wife, Pearl; brothers-in-law: Neal Rudolph “Rudy” Freeburg and his wife, Beverly, Stanley Langenberg, Harold Brown, Jr., Milton “Tilly” Thulin and Doug York.
