New numbers released from the United States Department of Agriculture show cattle inventory is down 3% from 2012. All cattle and calves in the United States as of July 1st totaled 95 million head. This is the lowest July inventory since the USDA began tracking the numbers in 1973.
Out of all cows and heifers that have calved, beef cows are down 3% from July 1st, 2012. Milk cows are up 1% from the same time.
The 2014 calf crop is expected to be 33.6 million. That is down 1% from 2013 and 2% for 2012. Cattle inventory for July 1st was not released in 2013 because of the sequestration.
