A legislatively commissioned consultant's study of Nebraska's prison system suggests building more jails is the best way to handle an overflowing inmate population.
Released this week, Dewberry Architect's suggestion is to build three new prison facilities, which could cost the state more than 130 million dollars. The proposals include a new 300 bed prison in Omaha; as well as the addition of over 500 beds at two already existing Lincoln sites.
Both Governor Heineman and Attorney General Jon Bruning say they want to wait before making any final decisions.
