Yet another black eye for the Nebraska Department of Corrections. State taxpayers will be shelling out almost 800,000 dollars to settle a civil rights lawsuit filed by five former black prison guards.
The guards had alleged race-based harassment and retaliation at the State Penitentiary in Lincoln. The state did not admit any wrongdoing as part of the settlement.
The big settlement comes on the heels of a major scandal at the Corrections Department in which hundreds of inmates were released early through a misinterpretation of Good Time legislation.
