Dorothy Jeanette Nelson, 94 years of age, of Holdrege, passed away on Thursday, October 10, 2013 at the Christian Homes Care Community at Holdrege. Dorothy was born October 1, 1919 on the family farm, north of Sacramento, Nebraska, in Phelps County, the eldest of two children born to Silas James and Hulda Amelia (Nelson) Johnston. She received her primary education in Phelps County and then graduated from Holdrege High School with the class of 1938.

On December 24, 1938, Dorothy was united in marriage to Vernon Clair Nelson at Kearney, Nebraska and to this union five children were born: Johnny, Barbara, Vernon James, Wesley, and Julie. The family made their home on a family farm northeast of Loomis, where they engaged in farming and cattle feeding. Dorothy thoroughly enjoyed life as a farmwife, working side-by-side with her husband, Vernon and providing meals to the field. Dorothy and her daughter, Julie also enjoyed working together at the Klassic Boutique in Loomis for several years. Later in years her husband, Vernon and she established “Vernon’s Antiques” in Loomis which they operated for many years. When they retired from farming the couple moved into Loomis. She was preceded in death by her husband, Vernon in 1995. Later in years, Dorothy began to make her home at Chrisoma West in Holdrege. While on the farm, Dorothy attended the Moses Hill Covenant Church and later in years attended the First United Methodist Church in Holdrege. As a past-time, Dorothy enjoyed writing poetry. She was proud of the fact that some of her poems were published in a book. Everyone who knew Dorothy will remember how much she loved to go dancing. Dorothy and Vernon enjoyed traveling, and most of all they loved spending time with her family. Her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren were the pride and joy of her life.

Besides her parents and husband, Vernon, Dorothy was preceded in death by a grandson, Wesley Allen Nelson; and sister-in-law, Elda Linden and her husband, Ray.

She is survived by her five children: Johnny Nelson and his wife, Evie of Holdrege, Barbara Clinch and her husband, John of Grand Island, Nebraska, Vernon James Nelson and his wife, Marvel of Holdrege, Wesley Nelson and his wife, Connie of Holdrege, and Julie Nelson and her husband, James of Loomis, Nebraska. In addition, she is also survived by fourteen grandchildren; twenty-six great-grandchildren; one brother, Paul Johnston and his wife, Maxine of Lincoln, Nebraska; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, October 13, 2013 from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. with the family greeting from 1:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Nelson-Bauer Funeral Home in Holdrege.
