Ellen “Irene” Bishop, 91, of Grand Island died Friday, November 8, 2013 at her home with her family at her side.

Ellen “Irene” BishopMemorial service will be held at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at All Faiths Funeral Home.  Dan Naranjo will officiate.  Burial of ashes will be in Grand Island City Cemetery.

A gathering of friends and family will be from 10:30 a.m. until service time.

Irene was born December 10, 1921 in Grand Island to Wilbur and Georgiana (Bailey) Rathbun.

Survivors include her children and their spouses, Sharon and Joel  VonAschwege of Kearney, Steven and Candy Bishop of Lexington, Stan and Jane Bishop of San Antonio, TX and Susan Bishop of Omaha; and a sister, Ruth Reeves of Norfolk.

Those also left to cherish her memory include four grandchildren, Scott (Tasha) VonAschwege of Kearney, Ron (Caroline) Bishop of San Antonio, Angela (Michael) Martinson of Gretna and Andy VonAschwege of Alliance; and two great grandchildren, Meghann Martinson and Barrett VonAschwege.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph on August 18, 1996; her parents; and two brothers, Don Rathbun and Ralph Rathbun.

Irene grew up and attended school in Grand Island, graduating in 1939.  She was united in marriage to Ralph J. Bishop on June 24, 1942. The couple made their home in Grand Island and Irene lived her entire life within a mile of where she was born.

A wonderful homemaker, her other enjoyments included gardening, cards, dominos, and reading. Irene spent many hours volunteering at Saint Francis Medical Center and Stuhr Museum. She loved to travel and enjoyed several trips over the years with Ralph to the mountains of Colorado and to Texas . Irene also appreciated and enjoyed the cranes as they migrated through Nebraska. A dedicated wife and mother, Irene will be remembered for her undying love for her family.
