As Grand Island's immigrant population continues to grow, one group is hoping to help people assimilate.
The Sudanese Community of Grand Island held an event at the First Presbyterian Church to help kids learn U.S. laws, and understand American culture.
Different sessions were held for kids and parents, covering topics including drugs, drinking and driving, attending school and doing homework.
Organizers say this is an important event, and parents are glad to have the opportunity.
"It's going to be difficult, but you need somebody to step up and say this is how we are and this is what we learn. If we don't talk, nobody will understand." Said Peter Lokodu, organizer of the event.
"Drugs and alcohol are not good for them. So it's good for them to learn about it, how dangerous it is to affect them in their life." Said Christine Kizito, mother of three.
Organizers say they hope to hold similar events every 6 months.
