Gerald Charles “Jerry” Elliott, 72 years of age, of Kearney, Nebraska (formerly of Wilcox), passed away on Wednesday, October 30, 2013 at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney. He was born on April 30, 1941 at Sioux City, Iowa, one of two sons born to Ulysses Sidney and Mary M. (Riggen) Elliott. Jerry grew up in Laurel, Nebraska and graduated from Laurel High School with the class in 1959 as the valedictorian. He attended the University of Nebraska at Lincoln, graduating in 1964 with a degree in Science and Education. While at UNL he was also in ROTC for two years.

On August 18, 1963, he married Dorothy Jean Ellermeier in Bruning, Nebraska and they were blessed with three children: Howard Lee, Andrew Robert and Mari Irene. The family made their home in Wilcox.

Jerry taught initially at Western, Nebraska from 1964-1968 and then began his career in Wilcox as a science teacher and coach from 1968-2002 and then Wilcox-Hildreth until 2005. He was known as “Mr. Elliott” to his many students and colleagues. When he retired from teaching, he worked as a sports columnist for the Holdrege Daily Citizen for several years and then health issues required a move to Kearney where he was currently living.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church of Wilcox and the Wilcox Lions Club. He also served on the Wilcox Village Board, past Mayor, and was on the Wilcox-Hildreth School Board for a couple of terms.

Jerry enjoyed teaching and coaching, but treasured the time he spent with students and athletes watching them develop. In his later years, Jerry enjoyed watching baseball, football and basketball, and was an avid Husker and Cubs fan.

Jerry was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy in 2004; his daughter, Mari in 1993; and his son, Howie in 2009.

He is survived by his son, Andy Elliott and his wife, Ellie of Shawnee, Kansas; two granddaughters: McKenna and Brooklyn Elliott of Shawnee; one brother, Gene Elliott and his wife, Connie of South Sioux City, Nebraska; one niece, Alicia Elliott of South Sioux City; two nephews: Stacey Elliott and his wife, Francis of Elkhorn, Nebraska, Gary Elliott and his wife, Sandy of Durango, Colorado; along with many extended family members and friends.

Visitation will be held on Friday, November 1, 2013 from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. with the family greeting from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Bauer-Torrey & Mach Funeral Home in Wilcox.
