Good roads are important for economic growth and public safety. That's the message Governor Dave Heineman had today when updating the state on the Build Nebraska Act.

Governor Heineman signed the bill into law in 2011. The Build Nebraska Act directs a portion of Nebraska's existing sales tax to fund new road construction throughout the state. Included in the law are 17 projects over a 10 year period.

Phase one projects are currently underway, which includes Kearney's East Bypass. The Bypass officially opened in August of last year and Phase Two of that project is set to begin. The second group of projects is scheduled for fiscal years 2016 through 2019.

Included in those projects is work to Highway 6 southeast of Hastings. The final and third group of projects is scheduled for fiscal years 2020 through 2023. That will include widening Highway 30 west of Grand Island.
