Grand Island residents got into the holiday spirit Friday with the Downtown Christmas.
It kicked off with the lighting of the Community Christmas Tree at 5 p.m. outside City Hall. The tree is decorated with ornaments made by elementary students.
From there, Santa led the way to Christmas in Kaufmann Park, where the festivities continued until 8:30 p.m.
From a gingerbread house contest, to cookie decorating and ornament making, there was a lot to do. Some residents even stopped at Mistletoe Market to get their holiday shopping starting early.
"The kids get so excited," said Jeremy Vlcek who attended the event dressed as the character The Grinch. "My little kids come here and enjoy it. It just nice to have community come together in downtown Grand Island and what a better way to celebrate Christmas."
This was the first year the tree lighting and the Downtown Christmas were held the same day.
