Hundreds of local kids know a little bit more about fire prevention this week.

The Grand Island Fire Department has been touring elementary schools.

Fire Prevention week was last week but the GIFD is still spreading awareness.

They've been to Knickrehm, Newell, Dodge and today West Lawn Elementary.

Kids studied evacuation methods and learned the most important thing to do in a fire: stay calm.

They even had an evacuation of their own, checking the door for heat and exiting through the window.

"Taking this kids through stuff like this...It's good for us and it's good for the kids. The kids learn how to do it and we like teaching them how to do it,” said Capt. Todd Morgan.

Captain Todd Morgan has been in the department for over 20 years...

They've been teaching kids fire safety for as long as he can remember.
