In just a matter of weeks a blank wall in Hastings has become a vibrant representation of the community.
The mural project is just about complete and will be dedicated Sunday, Oct. 13 at 4 p.m.
News 5's Tim McNicholas interviewed Hastings Art Council member Kaleena Fong about the project.
TIM: Kaleena, how did it get this colorful this quick?
KALEENA: We had a lot of help from the community. Over Sept. 14 nd 15 we had over 200 community members come out and paint a piece of the wall. Since then we’ve had three artists out every day to make sure the detail is there and that the mural really comes to life.
TIM: That’s actually what’s so special is that the community actually contributed to this. Tell me a little about the feedback on that.
KALEENA: Well, the community’s been really excited about the project through the whole process. There was a series of community meetings and they got to give their input in that and they were on the design team where they gave their input there and they got to come paint, and it’s just really been an exciting process.
TIM: How did
KALEENA: Well, we went through an application process and competed with at least two other cities to be able to get this mural in, so it’s just great that we were selected and been an exciting project that we’ll be able to enjoy for a decade, at least.
