A portion of the Hastings Regional Center set to be demolished could be spared. The building is being talked about as a solution to the overcrowded prison system in Nebraska.
Members of the judiciary commission talked today about the possibility of using the building to house prisoners undergoing mental health and substance abuse treatment.
State Senator Les Seiler of Hastings says the building needs to be upgraded. And, could house up to 250 inmates.
Renovations would need to include adding security to keep prisoners from walking away.
The Regional Center is one of several on the former state psychiatric hospital grounds that had been slated for demolition.
