Football is a war of attrition ...and you don't have to look far to find a prime example

Nebraska ...headed into Saturday's contest with Michigan

Without Taylor Martinez....wide receiver Jamal Turner

And two mainstays on the offensive line ...Spencer Long and Jake Cotton

To add insult to injury .... Big Red ...also losing Jeremiah Sirles in the big house to a left leg injury ...but it was the maligned defense

That came through....to give big red a chance to snatch another late game victory

John Papuchis's unit ...holding the maize and blue to only 175 yards of total offense

And get this ...negative 21 yards on the ground

One of the key cogs....standout sophomore defensive end Randy Gregory

Who notched a career high...three sacks

"We kind of figured out we're a good unit. I think a lot of people were kind of looking down on us at the beginning of the season and I think that kind of gave us fuel for the rest of the season and like I said, we didn't change up much but we changed up a couple things and I think it really worked in our favor."

And for the second week in a row...the defense produced big stops down the stretch ...to give the offense a chance to win it

And that ...they did ...as Tommy Armstrong Junior lead big red on a 14 play ...75 yard drive

Capped by an Ameer Abdullah touchdown scamper ...to give Nebraska a 17 to 13 victory

"You know it was a team effort and we all came out and Jordan Westerkamp, had a mistake, and we told him, hey, don't worry about it. Our defense got a good stop like they did last week. Got us three points, held them to three points and we told them we were going to go down and we are going to win the game. And that's what we did. We drive down, six minutes and we scored and went up by four."

" We got some gritty games. Those guys, you know they play hard. I feel like sometimes we are the underdog any time we play them so of course I'm not going to like them. Michigan or any other team in the conference honestly when we are playing them. The fans, they create a great atmosphere. Obviously those guys are rowdy and they really want to make it tough on the away team and we did a good job staying poised today."
