Immigration reform is picking up steam in the Nebraska legislature.  Fourteen state senators are officially supporting a legislative resolution addressing the need for reform.

The resolution, co-sponsored by senators from both parties, calls on Congress for comprehensive immigration reform.

Here in Nebraska we have an estimated 40,000 undocumented immigrants.

Omaha Senator Jeremy Nordquist says because of the disfunction in our federal immigration system, we have a system that tears communities apart.

The state senator says now we need a system that gets immigrants, who are doing the right thing in Nebraska, legal status.

"Who are being good parents, good community members, and trying to work hard and play by the rules the best the can but unfortunately either they overstayed their visa or came here for other reasons and we just need to get them legal status so they can continue to be good community members," said Senator Jeremy Nordquist, District 7.

And Nebraska wouldn't be alone-- 31 other states have already passed similar legislation.
