John A. Brunken, 84 of Doniphan died Thursday, February 20, 2014 at the Grand Island Veterans Home.

Services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at All Faiths Funeral Home in Grand Island. Dan Naranjo will officiate. Burial will be in the Cedarview Cemetery near Doniphan.

To honor Mr. Brunken’s wishes there will be no visitation. 

Mr. Brunken was born September 24, 1929 in Adams County to John and Sibledeena (Eyten) Brunken.

Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Jeanine; daughter and son-in-law, Kathy and Stanley Roach of Doniphan; grandchildren, Dale and Brook Roach of Lincoln, Scott and Stephanie Roach of Doniphan; great-grandchildren, Thomas, David, Kaitlyn and Madison and brother, Arnold Brunken of Kenesaw.

He is preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Reka Eyten, Elizabeth Ransom, Gretchen Smith and brothers, Martin, James, Jakob and Dale Brunken.

John graduated from Juniata High School, class of 1947. He entered the United States Army serving from 1951-1953 in Korea and Japan.

John and Jeanine were married on August 8, 1953 in Hastings. They have made their home in Doniphan. John worked for 20 years for the Kansas Nebraska Gas Company in construction. He later worked as a custodian for Doniphan Public Schools for 20 years. 

Following retirement he spent time at the farm with their many animals. They loved boating and fishing at Harlan County Lake where they had a cabin until moving to the Grand Island Veterans Home because of poor health.

He is a member of the American Legion, Eagles, Platt-Duetsche, Doniphan United Methodist and retired member of the Doniphan Volunteer Fire Department.
