Hastings resident, John I. Newman, 70, passed away Saturday, May 31, 2014 at the Mary Lanning Memorial HealthCare, Hastings.

Memorial service will be at 11 am, June 6, 2014 at the Apfel Funeral Home Chapel, Hastings with Frank Swinnea officiating. Military rites will be held at the funeral home. Private family burial at the Kenesaw Cemetery, Kenesaw. Condolences may be sent to the family from www.apfelfuneralhome.com. Apfel Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Memorials may be given to the family.

John was born March 29, 1944 to to George R.I. and Esther L. (Real) Newman in Ansley, NE. He served in the United States Marines from September 21, 1963 to August 20, 1969. He married Eunice Haggerty on March 12, 1965. John worked for the Union Pacific Railroad for many years.

He was a lifetime member of the Amvets. He loved to wood work, hunt , fish, do word searches and crossword puzzles. John also called bingo at Good Samaritan Society for many years.

He is survived by his mother Esther Newman of Lincoln, two son’s John Newman of Kearney and Allen (Angela) Newman of Hastings, three daughters, Carla Bourg of Red Cloud, Belinda Harris of Springfield, OR, and Arla Brophy of Kearney, 11 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren and one sister, Esther Moore of Ceresco, NE.

He was preceded in death by his father and his wife Eunice on November 5, 2008.
