A Celebration of Life Service for Lula M. Hedstrom will be conducted from the Trinity Lutheran Church in Axtell, Nebraska on Friday, December 6, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. with Reverend Gale Dorn officiating. Private Family Interment will be held in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery at Axtell prior to the service.

Lula Mae Hedstrom, 89 years of age, of Axtell, passed away on Monday, December 2, 2013 at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney, Nebraska. Lula was born February 11, 1924 at McCook, Nebraska, a twin to her brother, Leslie and the second of five children born to Frank L. and Effie C. (Caress) Beedle. The family made their home in Arapahoe, Nebraska, where Lula began her education until the family settled to Holdrege. Lula then graduated from Holdrege High School with the class of 1943.

Following her education, Lula was employed by Brewster Field in Holdrege, where she obtained her private pilot’s license. Even though she was scared to death of heights, Lula continued this love for flying for many years.

On December 22, 1945, Lula was united in marriage to Duane E. Hedstrom in Norfolk, Virginia while he was serving in the United States Navy. They made their home north of Holdrege, where they engaged in farming and to this union five children were born: Tom, Cindy, Jerry, Jody and Sheila. In 1952 the family moved back to Axtell area, where Lula remained the balance of her life. She was preceded in death by her husband, Duane in February of 1994.

She was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Axtell, where she was active in many capacities, member of the Eastern Star for over sixty years, the V.F.W. Auxiliary, member of the H.O.A. Club, the Hard Times Club, and active with many card clubs through the years. She will also be remembered by many friends and family for her floral design and decorating skills at Lula’s Gift Gallery at Axtell. Lula was also active in the community, and honored as Citizen of the Year in 1985. She loved to follow the Axtell sporting events and was an avid UNL Football and Volleyball fan. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were always the pride and joy of her life.

Besides her husband, Duane and her parents; Lula was preceded in death by a son, Jerry Hedstrom, granddaughter, Beth Williams, twin brother, Leslie, sister, Bonnie Gene Beedle and son-in-law, Devon Carmoney.

She leaves to mourn her passing her four children: Tom Hedstrom and his wife, Cheryl of Kearney, Cindy Williams and her husband, Larry of Lexington, Nebraska, Jody Casper and her husband, Steve of Minden, Nebraska, and Sheila Carmoney of Axtell; 13 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; one brother, Frank Lee Beedle and his wife, Kathy of California; one sister, Arlis Lincoln of Washington State; sister-in-law, Darlene McMillian of Colorado and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, December 5, 2013 at the Nelson-Bauer Funeral Home in Holdrege, Nebraska from 3:00 – 8:00 p.m. with the family greeting from 5:00 p.m. – 6:30 p.m. An Eastern Star Service will be held at 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

A memorial has been established in Lula’s honor and will be designated at a later date.
