Mary Maxine (Greening) Winz, 85 years of age, passed away on Friday, May 2, 2014 at the Holdrege Memorial Homes in Holdrege. Mary was born on July 15, 1928 on a farm twelve miles northwest of Bloomington, Nebraska, the second child of four children born to Harry Robert and Hazel Barbara (Anderson) Greening.
Mary attended the Pleasant View School through fourth grade, moving with her family from the farm to Bloomington in August 1937, after the death of her father on November 5, 1936. She attended Bloomington School from fifth grade, graduating from Bloomington High School with the class of 1945. Mary then attended Kearney State College, earning her teaching certificate. She taught school for three years in Nebraska and three years in Kansas at rural schools. She then earned her Certificate in Radiology. She began working as an x-ray technician at the Brewster Clinic and Hospital in Holdrege on July 1, 1952. She worked for Brewster Clinic, later called Holdrege Medical Clinic then Family Medical Specialties, for 47 ½ years. She was proud of her many years of work at the clinic and valued the many friends she made there over the years. She volunteered to participate in medical trials of several new heart medications and procedures, and she was very proud that she had helped pave the way for others to benefit from these treatments.
Mary was baptized on March 25, 1951, and became a member of First Methodist Church of Bloomington.
On March 17, 1958, she was united in marriage to Harold Michael “Mike” Winz at the United Methodist Chapel in Holdrege. After a trip to the west coast, they settled on their farm west of Ragan, Nebraska where they lived for 56 years. To this union two children were born: a daughter Rhonda Jane and a son Kelly Gregg.
Mary loved backyard flowers, gardening, and helping with the farm. She enjoyed cooking, especially for holiday dinners when she would prepare a feast for her family. She loved sewing and doing embroidery. She created dozens of beautiful dresses and outfits for Barbie dolls and 18” dolls, cherished gifts to her granddaughters. She especially enjoyed the annual trips that she and her husband took to Mountain View, Arkansas to hear the Bluegrass and mountain string music, celebrating their 30th year there in the fall of 2005. Mary found great joy in spending time with her three grandchildren, and they treasured every moment spent with their beloved Grandma.
Besides her parents, Mary was preceded in death by: brothers: John Greening and Lloyd Greening; a sister-in-law Donna Rae Greening; a brother-in-law Alfred Frerichs; and niece Kari Frerichs.
Mary leaves to mourn her passing her husband, Mike of rural Holdrege; son Kelly Winz of Ragan; daughter Rhonda Kruger and her husband, Ronald, of rural Holdrege; three grandchildren: Rebekah Jane, Andrew Michael, and Sarah Rachel Kruger all of rural Holdrege; a sister Harriet Frerichs of Minden, Nebraska; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
