Funeral Services for Naomi K. Childress will be conducted at the United Methodist Church in Oxford, Nebraska on Friday, April 11, 2014 at 10:30 a.m. with Mr. Dave Hunt, officiating. Interment will follow in the Orleans Cemetery at Orleans, Nebraska.
Naomi Kathryn Childress, 77 years of age, of Edison, Nebraska, passed away on Monday, April 7, 2014 at the Golden Living Center in Cozad, Nebraska following a long battle with Alzheimer’s. Naomi was born February 1, 1937 in Orleans, Nebraska, the eldest of two children born to Paul H. and Mable L. (Covey) Coffey. She was baptized on November 24, 1940 at the United Methodist Church in Orleans. She received her primary school at Alma, Orleans and then Oxford, before graduating from Oxford High School with the class of 1955.
Naomi was united in marriage to Franklin Schoen in 1955 and to this union two sons were born: Steven F. and Michael J. Schoen. The family made their home on the farmstead north of Oxford.
On July 18, 1970, Naomi was united in marriage to Harold E. “Bud” Childress and she welcomed his three sons into their family. Naomi and Bud made their home in several communities throughout Nebraska before settling to Edison. Bud preceded Naomi in death in 1998.
Naomi was employed as a buyer at the McDonald’s clothing store in Holdrege for three years. She was then employed as a bookkeeper at Fritzer Memorial Hospital in Oxford until they closed in 1990. Naomi then worked as a bookkeeper at the Ag Valley Co-op in Edison until her retirement in 1999. In April of 2007, she began to make her home at the Golden Living Center in Cozad for her health care needs.
Naomi enjoyed the outdoors including fishing, gardening and bird watching. She also loved to attend her grandchildren’s activities. She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Oxford, where she was active with the United Methodist Women.
Besides her parents, and husband, Harold, Naomi was preceded in death by one brother, Richard Coffey.
She leaves to mourn her passing: her two sons: Steve Schoen and his wife, Kim, and Mike Schoen and his wife, Charlene all of Oxford; three step-sons: Tom, Don and Dick Childress and their families; five grandchildren: Matt, Abby and Mandy Schoen and Cody and Derek Schoen; one sister-in-law, Marla Coffey of Blue Hill, Nebraska; and a host nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, April 10, 2014 from 4:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. with the family greeting from 6:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. at the Mitchell-Nelson-Bauer Funeral Home in Oxford.
A memorial has been established in Naomi’s honor and will be designated at a later date.
