Not affordable. That's what the CEO of the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services is saying about Medicaid expansion in Nebraska.
Kerry Winterer was speaking specifically to LB 887. The Wellness in Nebraska Act would provide health insurance coverage to 54,000 working Nebraskans.
Winterer said the expansion would shift a huge burden to Nebraska taxpayers. Winterer said in a study by a third party, the total cost of LB 887 in state and federal funds through 2020 is nearly 3.4 billion dollars. This is in addition to costs of the current Medicaid program.
Governor Heineman has also spoken out strongly against Medicaid expansion in Nebraska.
