Today state lawmakers passed LB 986, a bill that would make most Nebraska retirees eligible for property tax relief. The Revenue Committee's bill passed 43 to 0. It would change the Nebraska Homestead Exemption by increasing the maximum eligible income for partial exemptions for married Nebraskans older than 65 to 46,900 dollars a year.

That maximum had previously been 28,500 dollars. The maximum for single Nebraskans over 65 was also increased from 24,200 dollars to 39,500 dollars. The bill also includes an amendment adding people with developmental disabilities to the list of those eligible beginning January 1st, 2015.
