Nebraska is one step closer to a higher minimum wage. The fate of the issue will likely lie in the hands of voters.
The group Nebraskans for Better Wages collected nearly 135,000 signatures. They turned them in this afternoon.
They needed 81,000 signatures to get the measure on the November ballot. The signatures will need to be verified by the Secretary of State to make sure they are from registered voters.
If voters pass the measure. the state's minimum wage would increase from $7.25 an hour to $8 an hour by January 1st, then to $9 an hour by the start of 2016.
