State Patrol investigating officer involved shooting in Scottsbluff

The Nebraska State Patrol is investigating an officer involved shooting of an armed man in Scottsbluff.

Around 8 p.m. last night, Scottsbluff Police responded to reports of a man armed with a gun and a knife causing a disturbance. Officers made contact with an armed man who then fled into a motorhome parked outside of the residence. Additional enforcement was brought in, including the State Patrol.

Around 10:30 p.m. 29 year-old Matthew Schwab came out of the motorhome, pointing a handgun at officers. A Scottsbluff Police officer fired two rounds at the suspect. Schwab was struck twice in the upper body. He was transported to Regional West Medical Center, where he is listed in stable condition.

The officer who fired on the suspect has been identified as Officer Matt Herbel. The 11 year veteran of the department has been placed on paid administrative leave pending the investigation.
