Patricia “Trish” Backlund, 82, of Grand Island died on April 9, 2014 at Tiffany Square Care Home. 

Graveside Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on April 21, 2014 at Grand Island City Cemetery. Fr. Robert Lewis will officiate. Following graveside services, a gathering of family and friends will be held at St. Stephens Episcopal Church. 

To honor Trish’s wishes cremation has taken place with no visitation. All Faiths Funeral Home is serving the family. 

Trish was born on January 7, 1932 at Grand Island to Herbert, Sr. and Linda (Rathman) Mayer.

She is survived by her sisters-in-law, Katharine “Toni” Mayer, and Karen Mayer both of Grand Island; nephews and nieces, John (Lisa) Mayer, Stephanie Gauthier, Henry Mayer, Rebecca Mayer, Amy (Mark) Levasseur, Elizabeth (Brent) Golden, Mary Katharine “Mimi” Mayer, also her faithful and devoted friend, Lorraine Ocampo. 

Trish is preceded in death by her husband, Merle who died in 1976, her parents, and two brothers, Herb Mayer, Jr. and John Mayer. 

She was raised in Grand Island and graduated from Grand Island High School in 1949. After high school she attended Colorado Women’s College for a year and continued her education at the University of Nebraska at Lincoln. She graduated with a Bachelor of Arts and Science, major in Sociology and a minor in Speech and English. 

In 1953 she married Charles Talbot in 1953, and later was united in marriage to Merle Backlund in 1966. Trish enjoyed volunteering, and spent time working at Fonner Park, Dreisbachs, and Yonkers. She was a member of St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, the Saddle Club and Liederkranz. 

Memorials are suggested to St. Stephens Episcopal Church or Central Nebraska Humane Society.
