The unicameral floor flies through final readings of bill after bill this morning, among them, prison reform. This morning with a 46 to 0 vote, state senators passed LB 907, a key bill in Omaha Senator Brad Ashford's prison reform. After the bill was passed, Senator Ashford called it a collaborative effort of all three branches of state government.
The bill is intended to reduce the recidivism rate of offenders released from prison. Because of an added emergency clause, the law will go into effect immediately after it is signed by the Governor.
And big news for Hastings out of the legislature this morning. With a 47 to 0 vote, it looks as though a Hastings Behavioral Health Treatment Center is headed to town. LB 999, introduced by Hastings Senator Les Seiler will upgrade facilities at the Hastings Regional Center to accommodate inmates in need of drug, alcohol and mental health treatment. It is also now on its way to the Governor's desk.
