There have been two sheriffs in Adams County in the past 60 years. And since 1983 Sheriff Gregg Magee has held that title. But now there's competition for his seat.
Ric Hallett is a retired Hastings Police Sergeant who worked for the police department from 1981 to 2005. The Adams County YWCA hosted a forum today.
Hallett says the big issues facing the county include, low staffing issues within the department, improved courthouse security, and the need for a new jail.
Sheriff Magee said a new facility is expensive and it could take a while to get the funds approved.
"Courthouse, jails space, or a new facility that's been an ongoing discussion and it's a long haul for the community to actually approve the jail with the expense of the jail."
Hallet said "This is something that needs to move forward. The other communities have. Hall County has. Lexington has and some of the other smaller communities have built new jail cells. Lincoln county and North Platte has just built a new jail cell. They're ahead of the time. That's where we need to be."
The Primary election will be held on May 13th.
