Top Republicans are heading to Hastings this weekend for the state GOP Convention. Friday evening, activities kicked off with a meet and greet between local constituents and elected officials at the Howard Johnson hotel.
US Congressman Adrian Smith and US Senator Deb Fischer are in attendance.

This is an important election year for Republicans. There's a key race for Governor and US Senate in Nebraska that Republicans are watching closely. US Congressman Adrian Smith will be running against Mark Sullivan in the General election on November 5th. House Majority leader Eric Cantor recently lost his bid for re-election.

We asked Congressman Smith what Cantor's loss means for the Republican Party.
"We are working hard to not take anything for granted, we don't have the national position say for example that Eric Cantor did, so he was traveling a lot across the country. My traveling is back to my district. I'm grateful for the opportunity though."
The convention activities continue Friday night at the LARK in downtown Hastings with a booster club reception until 9 PM. The GOP convention will be held on Saturday in the gym on the campus of CCC.
