Nebraska is being told by the Federal Government to pay up. State Auditor Mike Foley announced on Wednesday that the federal government has called on Nebraska to pay 22 million dollars in misspent Federal money.
Foley says the recent finds relate to how poorly the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services has handled the child welfare services. The State has 30 days to repay. Nebraska can decide to appeal.
If Nebraska decides not to make immediate repayment, they could be subject to annual interest expenses over 10 percent.
This notice isn't the only problem State Auditor Mike Foley's audit has caught while investigating DHHS. Back in August, faced a similar repayment of 3.2 million dollars.
Nebraska initially appealed the cost but later withdrew the appeal. Foley was in the Tri-Cities on Wednesday meeting with constituents to discuss his run for Governor.
