A father in Georgia is facing murder charges after his son died after being left in a hot car for hours.

Today, in New Mexico a little girl was rescued from a locked pickup truck after more than an hour. She survived.

News 5's Kelly Baumgarten shows us how dangerous being locked in a car can be this time of year.

Unfortunately, it's something we've all seen on the news recently people leaving their pets and even their own children in hot cars. So, I'm gonna do a little experiment I'm locking myself inside my car.I have the windows shut the air conditioner off and I'm gonna see how long it takes for this thermometer to reach 100 degrees.

Now, it's only about 79 degrees outside, it's not that hot, but what many people don't realize is that even when temperatures are only in the 60's outside cars can still reach temperatures of up to 110 degrees. Right now the thermometer is at 83 degrees so I'll check back with you guys in a little bit wish me luck.

According to the national highway safety administration 619 children have died in vehicles from heat stroke since 1998. More than half of heat stroke fatalities are a result of a parent forgetting their child in the car.

"I think it's more on purpose people think they're gonna run in real quick and run back out and it doesn't always work out that way," said Nelson resident, Mike DeVaney.

So it's only been about 15 minutes and I'm starting to get really uncomfortable really sweaty and believe it or not the thermometer is already at 100 degrees.

A car can heat up 20 degrees in 10 minutes. The body temperature of children can increase three to five times faster than adults. When the body reaches 104 degrees heat stroke sets in, when your body hits 107 degrees it can be fatal.

"It's neglect and neglect is a form of abuse and someone should step in," said Hastings resident and mother Darleen Griffin.

So another 10 minutes have gone by I'm scorching it's so hot in here i had to put my hair up it's terrible, it's absolutely terrible. So, let's check the thermometer we are at close to 110 degrees.

"They should never have any kids again or be around any kids or anything and maximum punishment of the law," said Mike DeVaney.

That was exhausting it feels like I'm in air conditioning right now and its 81 degrees outside imagine if you were locked in your car and you couldn't open your door.

While in the car, the temperature increased by 30 degrees in 25 minutes.
