The second of four finalists to be UNK Athletic Director is on campus today. The 3rd candidate will be in Kearney Thursday with the fourth and final candidate to be on campus next week.
Meet Jean Berger Senior Associate Athletic Director and senior womens' administrator at Northern Iowa University.
Jean is in charge of the womens' programs but also has worked with the Panther football program since she her arrival there in 2008.
She worked 17 years in various capacities in athletics at Drake University and feels there are many reasons why the UNK Athletic Director job is a great one.
"I knew the tradition was there, playing in a great league, I think it's the best Division two league, so that was attractive to me. The community, the 2 largest employers are the hospital and University. That tells me people value education. The thing you know that will be valuable is building championship teams and understanding how it is you need to compete against teams that right now you may think are better than you," said Berger.
Under her guidance, the women's basketball and softball programs recently earned their first NCAA tournament appearance and the volleyball team won an NCAA regional game over Kansas State at the Nebraska Coliseum late last year before falling to the Big Red.
She was also able to raise money with women's basketball and volleyball at UNI.
