Warren A. “Mike” Monnington, 88 of Grand Island died Wednesday, February 19, 2014 at St. Francis Medical Center, Grand Island, Nebraska.

Services will be 10:30 A.M. Thursday at Trinity United Methodist Church with the Rev. Bob Rhodes officiating. Burial will be in Grand Island Cemetery, Grand Island, Nebraska. Visitation hours will be from 4-7 P.M. Wednesday at Apfel Funeral Home. Memorials are suggested to Trinity United Methodist Church, Stuhr Museum, of the Overton Veterans Monument. Apfel Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mike Monnington was born December 11, 1925 in Overton, Nebraska the son of Abley & Lela E. (Warren) Monnington. He was baptized in the Overton Christian Church. He grew up in Overton graduating from Overton High School with the class of 1944. He entered the United States Navy, July 24, 1944 serving during World War II in the South Pacific, on an LSM, as a Gunners Mate 3rd Class. He received his honorable discharge, August 2, 1946. In 1950, he received his Bachelors Degree in Education from Kearney State Teachers College. While attending Kearney State, he was a member of Phi Tau Gamma Fraternity and was very involved with college athletics. He lettered four years in basketball and track and three years in football. Mr. Monnington was inducted into the Athletic Hall of Frame at Kearney State Teachers College in 1989. After he graduated from college he taught for the Aurora Public Schools for two years and worked at the Grand Island Sports Shop.

He was united in marriage to Wilma, “Billie” Anderson on August 14, 1955 at Trinity United Methodist Church in Grand Island. The couple made their home in Grand Island their entire married life.

He was employed by the Grand Island School System for 30 years, as a physical education teacher at Barr Junior High. He taught from 1955 until his retirement in 1985.

He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Grand Island, VFW, American Legion Club, Retired Teachers Association, Elks, and Liederkranz.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing and farming.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Billie, two daughters and sons-in-law, Kellie & Larry Hemingway of Kingwood, Texas, Shawn & Tim Jacobs of Grand Island; five grandchildren, Jeffrey Hemingway, Drew Hemingway, Sara Hemingway, Lindsay (Nick) Purcell all of Houston, Texas and Luke Jacobs of Grand Island, NE.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Abley and Lea E. (Warren) Monnington
