Thursday one Grand Island school celebrated some exciting news.  Wasmer Elementary was named one of the best schools in the state.

The news was kept a secret from teachers and students until an assembly Thursday.

Wasmer Elementary has been named a Title One Distinguished School-- a title only two schools in each state are awarded.

"It's a national award so that means everybody in the country and all of the states are going to learn about all of the great students, and listen to me carefully, and all of the great staff," said Grand Island Public Schools Superintendent Robert Winter to Wasmer's students and staff.

And how'd they keep the award a secret?  The announcement was all part of the monthly character and reading awards ceremony.
