There's been a recent outbreak of the whooping cough in California.
News 5's Ginger ten Bensel asks area doctors if that's a problem here in Nebraska in this week's What's Going Around.
Dr. Michael Johnson with the Hastings Family Practice says that bronchitis with a prolonged cough, as well as gastroenteritis and the flu are going around.
I asked Johnson about a recent outbreak of whooping cough in California that has killed 10 small children. Johnson says that there have been no outbreaks of whooping cough in Nebraska.
He said the best prevention is getting immunized. Johnson says that a T........Dap shot is for tetanus pertussis and diphtheria.
Dr. Janice Kutilek with the Grand Island Clinic says she is seeing patients with the flu, gastroenteritis and strep. Plus she is seeing an influx of patients with flu–like symptoms.
She says that she has even had some patients who have had the flu shot come in with influenza. She says the flu is not as severe though for people who have had a flu shot.
Kutilek says that Tamiflu is available but you need to take it within twenty four hours of the onset of the flu for it to work.
Another way to fight the flu? A low grade fever will help the body naturally fight the flu virus.
Kutilek also had two patients that have symptoms of whooping cough.
She is seeing a lot of patients with pertussis type illnesses. One patient had a bronchial spasm which causes constant coughing. She is also seeing patients...
...with symptoms of mycoplasma pneumonia. Symptoms include fatigue, body aches, and a cough.
She says if you have these symptoms don't assume it's the flu. You need to be seen and evaluated by a doctor.
