Pneumonia is causing some central Nebraskans to change their Christmas plans.
News 5's Ginger ten Bensel has more about the illness in this weeks edition of What's Going Around.
Dr. Janice Kutilek with the Grand Island Clinic says pneumonia is going around. She says this is the worst season for the disease she has ever seen.
She is seeing a lot of people with big infections in the chest area. Kutilek is seeing patients of all ages with pneumonia... she even put one four year old child in the hospital with it.
Symptoms of pneumonia include a cough but Kutilek says that exhaustion is the main symptom. Kutilek says that with colds and bronchitis you can still keep going about your day... but with pneumonia you don't have any energy to do anything. She says rest and rehydration are the most important things you can do to help yourself get over pneumonia.
Kutilek is also seeing a lot of patients with gastroenteritis and it's lasting an entire week. There is no treatment for the illness, but rest and fluids are vital in getting well. Plus she has seen a lot of people with strep throat.
Dr. Michael Johnson with the Hastings Family Practice says he's seeing a lot of the same illnesses from the last week. Sinus infections, gastroenteritis, bronchitis and flu-like illnesses are still going around.
But Johnson has not seen any documented cases of the flu. He says a lot of times he doesn't see any cases of the flu until after Christmas.
