A Clarks woman is dead and a semi-driver could face criminal charges after an accident in Merrick County Monday.

According to the Merrick County Attorney, 25 year-old Heather Stroud was headed eastbound on Highway 30, one mile west of Clarks, in her PT Cruiser.

When Stroud was stopped in an attempt to turn, 47 year-old James Horton of Roseland drove his semi-truck into the back of her vehicle. The initial accident pushed Stroud into the oncoming lane of traffic, where her vehicle was hit again.

Stroud was transported to Litzennberg Memorial Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Criminal charges against Horton are pending accident reconstruction by the Nebraska State Patrol. If Horton is found at fault, those charges could include motor vehicle homicide.

The Merrick County Sheriff's Department is also assisting with the investigation.
