A New Record...Hailstone Update 7/30

The new record holder

Well it was a good seven year run for Aurora, who laid claim as the record holder for  America's largest hailstone.  Sadly, Nebraska relinquishes that title to our neighbors to the north.
A committee from the National Atmospheric and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has verified that a hailstone, found by a ranch hand near the town of Vivian, South Dakota  last Friday, is indeed the new record holder....with the exception of one category.
The hailstone was officially measured at  8" in diameter and weighing in at 1.94 lbs.  The upperward wind velocity necessary to hold a stone that size aloft is estimated at almost 190 mph.  Wow!
Aurora will maintain the record for circumference at 18.75" compared to 18.62".  Small conselation.   It's going to be Vivian's name in the record books.  The residents  probably would just as soon hand back that distinction given the pounding and widespread damage caused by the large hail.
